Cape Clear Island Distillery is proud to be participating in the inaugural Community and Cargo voyage being undertaken by the historic sailing vessel Ilen. In fact, the first port of call for Ilen, as she makes her way up Ireland’s west coast, will be Cape Clear Island’s North Harbour, where she’ll take on a cargo of the award-winning 3 SQ. MILES gin. From the island, Ilen will call on several ports, delivering gin along the way.
Cape Clear Island is strongly associated with the historic Ilen, as it was two sailors from the island (Con and Denis Cadogan) who crewed her maiden voyage from Baltimore to the Faulkland Islands in 1926-27.
This year’s voyage, to bring cargo by sail to picturesque and historic small ports and communities along the Wild Atlantic Way recalls the great days of sail and speaks to modern concerns regarding sustainability, the slow food movement, and the strong and enduring bonds between our coastal communities.
Cape Clear Island Distillery has produced limited-edition engraved bottles for the occasion with the Ilen “Community & Cargo Voyage” logo and the names of participating ports, Oileán Cléire, An Daingean, Kilrush, Foynes, Limerick City and Cill Rónáin. These will cost €50 each and will be delivered to retail outlets in each location:
Garveys Supervalue, An Daingean, 066-9151397
Centra Off Licence, Foynes, 065-65534
No 21 Off Licence, Ballinacurra, Limerick City, 061-317489
Next Door Off Licence, Kilrush, 065-9062598

The voyage will eventually return to Cork City with a different consignment.
